In February 2007, the Supply Chain Innovation Centre (SCIC) was established as a joint initiative between GS1 Hong Kong (GS1 HK) and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) to bring supply chain management professionals and technology together to enable enterprises in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta to become more responsive to market needs and boost operational efficiencies. Founded by 10 RFID pioneering companies worldwide, SCIC had received over 3,500 visitors from local communities and over 20 countries ever since its establishment.
Building on the success of the SCIC, the Innovation and Technology Commission, HKSAR Government joined hands with GS1 HK and the HKSTP to further expand and enhance SCIC into the new Hong Kong RFID Centre (SCIC) with the mission to making it an outstanding RFID showcasing centre in the Asia Pacific region in the near future. Hong Kong RFID Centre (SCIC) was officially launched on 9 October 2008 at the Hong Kong Science Park.

Objectives of the Hong Kong RFID Centre (SCIC):
  • To enhance awareness and understanding of the general public of the RFID technology-- its applications, benefits and significances to the future development of Hong Kong;
  • To provide the necessary infrastructure and environment for nurturing the development of integrated RFID solutions in Hong Kong and the PRD region;
  • To promote Hong Kong and the PRD region as a regional center of gravity for accelerated adoption of EPC/RFID technology and for supply chain management best practices;
  • To facilitate EPC/RFID technology knowledge transfer, aiming ultimately at enabling enterprises in Hong Kong and the PRD to achieve speed to market and boost operational efficiencies, while bolstering overall economic competitiveness in the global marketplace.
The Hong Kong RFID Centre (SCIC) is located in Phase 2 of the Hong Kong Science Parks, next to the lakeside, occupying approximately 4,500 square feet and is divided into three thematic zones, namely Consumer Zone, Logistic Zone and Manufacturing Zone. The exhibit themes of the Hong Kong RFID Centre (SCIC) combine the existing supply chain oriented themes with the new theme of "RFID Making Lives Better" which centered on Clothing, Dinning, Commuting and Living.

As the objectives of the Centre suggested, the target audience of the Centre will not only cover the interests of different industry sectors but also the general public in particular the students and teenagers who will lead and sustain Hong Kong's future success.
